The Best Fly Fishing Story of All Time
A Little Known Fly Fishing Tale
When you think of classic literary Fish Tales I’m sure “The River Runs through it” falls somewhere in the top 10. Even Field & Stream listed it number 4 on their list of “The Best Fly Fishing Books of All Time”.
A little lesser known Fly Fishing Tale is the Big Two Hearted River written by Ernest Hemingway. This short story employs Hemingway’s ‘iceberg theory’, a method of storytelling that only gives the bare facts and leaves it up to the reader to make up the rest. Mbird.com gives a really detailed explaination of how this technique is used.
The story is told in two parts that follow the journey of a trout fisherman by the name of Nick Adams. As the “Iceberg theory” suggests this tale will have you looking at the underlying emotional storyline more than the fish rising to the surface. The tale is much deeper than the rivers that Hemingway’s autobiographical character wades through and well worth the short read.
You can download “The Complete Short Stories by Ernest Hemingway” pdf or read this scanned excerpt of the short story found on pages 980-992. I somehow found the latter oddly more enjoyable.
